THE BAGGIES 2020

WELCOME TO THE FIRST YEAR OF THE BAGGIES, INGLORIOUS BAGUETTES TO-BE ANNUAL FILM LOVERS AWARDS SHOW.

THIS IS BASED OFF MY PERSONAL PREFERENCES FOR THE FILMS OF THE PAST YEAR (2019) & CAN, THEREFORE, ONLY INCLUDES ONES I HAVE SEEN.

THEREFORE, SEEMING SNUBS ON “US” “HARRIET” & “RICHARD JEWELL” ARE SIMPLY BECAUSE I SADLY MISSED THOSE FILMS.

I  LOVE DOING THIS BECAUSE IT IS AGONIZING TO PUT ALL MY HOPES INTO THE YEARS POLITICIZED AND OFTEN SNUBBY ACADEMY AWARDS, SO I LESSON THE BLOW BY CREATING MY OWN FAVORITES LISTS & I ENCOURAGE ALL OTHER CINEPHILES TO DO THE SAME! ✨✨✨

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A NEWCOMER:

BEST DIRECTOR

  1. Bong Joon-ho (PARASITE)
  2. Sam Mendes (1917)
  3. Josh & Benny Safdie (UNCUT GEMS)
  4. Greta Gerwig (LITTLE WOMEN)
  5. Martin Scorsese (THE IRISHMAN)
  6. Quentin Tarantino (ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD)
  7. Lulu Wang (THE FAREWELL)
  8. Taika Waititi (JOJO RABBIT)

IT’S ALWAYS A CLOSE CALL WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY FANTASTIC FILMS EACH YEAR, BUT BONG JOON-HO CREATED SUCH A UNIQUE TALE THAT FELT LIKE IT COULD GO ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME. EACH CHARACTER WAS INTERESTING IN THEIR OWN WAY, EACH SHOT STUNNING, AND THE SUSPENSE FELT GRIPPING TO THE END. FURTHER, YOU USED HUMOR & CLEVER STORYTELLING TO TALK ABOUT REAL ISSUES. BRAVO! 👏👏👏👏👏

BEST SCREENPLAY

  1. PARASITE
  2. UNCUT GEMS
  3. KNIVES OUT
  4. BOMBSHELL
  5. LITTLE WOMEN
  6. ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  1. Greta Gerwig (LITTLE WOMEN)
  2. Steven Zaillian (THE IRISHMAN)
  3. Taika Waititi (JOJO RABBIT)
  4. Lulu Wang (THE FAREWELL)
  5. Anthony McCarten (THE TWO POPES)

GRETA GERWIG TOOK A CLASSIC PIECE OF LITERATURE THAT HAS BEEN ADAPTED NUMEROUS TIMES BEFORE IN SOME ALREADY OSCAR WINNING PORTRAYALS, AND MANAGED TO MAKE IT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND STILL BETTER. YOU CAN TELL HOW WELL-RESEARCHED AND THOUGHTFULLY CREATED THE ENTIRE SCRIPT IS, PULLING FROM HER KNOWLEDGE OF THE AUTHORS REAL LIFE AND ATTITUDE, AND PAYING HOMAGE TO WHAT GERWIG THOUGHT THAT ALCOTT MAY HAVE WANTED IN A BOLD AND RISKY MOVE TO TIE UP THE END. 👏👏👏👏👏

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

  1. Jacqueline Durran and David Crossman (1917)
  2. Miyako Bellizzi (UNCUT GEMS)
    1. “Howie’s style feels ridiculous, but not to the point of parody. It’s real because it’s just a little off.” An excellent piece depicting the perfection of the costume in this film.
  3. Jacqueline Durran (LITTLE WOMEN)
  4. Ariane Phillips (ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD)
  5. Jane Petrie (THE KING)
  6. Mayes C. Rubeo (JOJO RABBIT)
  7. Jenny Eagan (KNIVES OUT)

CONGRATS JACQUELINE DURRAN AND DAVID CROSSMAN FOR EXCELLENT COSTUMING IN 1917!!!! YOU JUST NAILED IT – DOWN TO THE DETAIL, EACH UNIFORM WAS CREATED WITH COMPLETE AUTHENTICITY BUT ALSO HAD TO BE UTILIZED THROUGHOUT THE FILM, MAKING IT FUNCTIONAL AND STRATEGIZED. BRILLIANT WORK!!! 👏👏👏👏👏

Film Title: 1917

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

  1. Fríða Aradóttir and Judy Chin (LITTLE WOMEN)
  2. Naomi Donne (1917)
    1. As mentioned in my review of this film, there are so many moments where subtlety is gold in the makeup & hair…. one character gets debris in his eyes and then spends the rest of the film with SLIGHT puffiness, going down as time passes
  3. Vivian Baker, Cristina Waltz, Richard Redlefsen, Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan, Jaime Leigh McIntosh, & Adruitha Lee (BOMBSHELL)
  4. Heba Thorisdottir (ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD)
  5. Sean Flannigan & Gary English (THE IRISHMAN)
  6. Nicki Leddermann (JOKER)

CHEERS TO FRIOA ARADOTTIR AND JUDY CHIN! GRETA GERWIG PROVIDED HER TEAMS WITH 19TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM JULIA MARGARET CAMERON WHERE YOUNG WOMEN WERE SEEN WITH TOUSLED LONG HAIR AND NATURALISTIC LOOKS, WHICH WERE EMULATED FOR THIS PICTURE. IT IS A CHOICE THAT BROUGHT THESE CHARACTERS TO LIFE AND MADE THEM FEEL RELATABLE, AS OPPOSED TO BEING STUCK IN A TIME CAPSULE. 👏👏👏👏👏

960x0

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  1. Roger Deakins (1917)
  2. Lawrence Sher (JOKER)

  6. Natasha Braier (HONEY BOY)
  7. Steve Yedlin (KNIVES OUT)

THIS FILM IS A CINEMATOGRAPHY TRIUMPH THANKS TO THIS MAN RIGHT HERE! ROGER DEAKINS, WE ARE AMAZED AT WHAT YOU WERE ABLE TO DO WITH SUCH AN UNDERTAKING – NOT ONLY PULLING IT OFF, BUT MAKING IT COMPLETELY BEAUTIFUL AND TRANSCENDENT!!! 👏👏👏👏👏

5e2b3487b6d52d3808796983

BEST EDITING

  1. Lee Smith (1917)
    1. How Lee Smith Cut a One-Shot Film
  2. Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland (FORD V FERRARI)
  3. Thelma Schoonmaker (THE IRISHMAN)
  4. Yang Jinmo (PARASITE)
  5. Chris Dickens (ROCKETMAN)

THE ACADEMY SNUBBED YOU BUT I WILL NOT!!! LEE SMITH, YOU ARE A CRUCIAL ELEMENT OF PULLING OFF THIS ONE-SHOT EPIC BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT IT WAS NOT LITERALLY ONE SHOT!!!! FLAWLESS EXECUTION – I LOOKED AND ALAS COULD NOT FIND ANY OBVIOUS CUTS. 👏👏👏👏👏

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE)

  1. Daniel Lopatin (UNCUT GEMS)
    1. UNCUT GEMS SOUNDTRACK
  2. Thomas Newman (1917)
    1. 1917 SOUNDTRACK
  3. Hildur Guðnadóttir (JOKER)
    1. JOKER SOUNDTRACK
  4. Alexandre Desplat (LITTLE WOMEN)
    1. LITTLE WOMEN SOUNDTRACK
  5. Randy Newman (MARRIAGE STORY)
    1. MARRIAGE STORY SOUNDTRACK

DANG DANIEL LOPATIN THIS MUSIC IS ABSOLUTE FIRE!!!!! SIMILAR TO THE SOUNDTRACK FROM “DRIVE” (2011), I  WANT TO HEAR THIS MUSIC GO ON TOUR OR LISTEN TO IT WHILE WALKING DOWN THE STREET. SO BEAUTIFUL, BUT OMINOUS. ELECTRONIC SOUNDS THAT FEEL TIMELESS AND ETHEREAL. 👏👏👏👏👏

Daniel-Lopatin-Mary-Kang

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)

  1. “Stand Up” by Joshuah Brian Campbell and Cynthia Erivo (HARRIET)
    1. Listen to Stand Up Here
  2. “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” Randy Newman (TOY STORY 4)
  3. “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” (ROCKETMAN)

BEAUTIFUL SONG PERFORMED BY THE LEAD ACTRESS FOR THE FILM “HARRIET”

👏👏👏👏👏Cynthia-Erivo-1119-04

PRODUCTION DESIGN

  1. Dennis Gassner; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales (1917)
  2. Lee Ha Jun; Set Decoration: Cho Won Woo (PARASITE)
  3. Barbara Ling; Set Decoration: Nancy Haigh (ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOD)
  4. Bob Shaw; Set Decoration: Regina Graves (THE IRISHMAN)

THIS GOES TO LEE SANDALES FOR “1917”!! I LOVED PARASITE’S SET FOR THE PARK FAMILY HOME, BUT I  CANNOT GET OVER THE SHEER MAGNITUDE OF WHAT WAS REQUIRED FOR THIS ONE… IT WOULD BE LIKE CONSTRUCTING A GIANT MAZE THAT STILL ALLOWS FOR ALL THE FILM EQUIPMENT TO PICK UP ON THE SOUND AND VISUALS NEEDED, BUT ALSO NEEDS TO CAPTURE THESE HISTORIC SITES WITH AUTHENTICITY FOR THE TIME. CRAZY WORK! 👏👏👏👏👏
